About the role

Teach assigned Native American and Indigenous Studies courses in the SJSU Online curriculum, including lower-division and upper-division undergraduate courses, as needed.

Conduct weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load and course modality.

Participate in assessment of student learning to support continuous improvement of teaching, learning, curriculum quality, and accreditation requirements.

Work collaboratively with program faculty, department leadership, instructional designers, and SJSU Online staff to support course quality, rigor, relevance, accessibility, and consistency.

Use inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive course materials, teaching strategies, and student engagement practices.

Provide timely communication, feedback, grading, and student support appropriate to online instruction and accelerated online terms.

Follow university, college, department, and SJSU Online policies and procedures related to instruction, student privacy, accessibility, academic integrity, and professional conduct.

Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity – including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Requirements

  • M.A. or other appropriate advanced degree in Native American and Indigenous Studies or a closely related field.
  • Expertise in one or more areas relevant to the Native American and Indigenous Studies curriculum, including but not limited to Indigenous studies, American Indian studies, California Indian history, tribal sovereignty, Indigenous governance, environmental studies, gender and sexuality, decolonial theory, and Indigenous futures.
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of the course or courses to which the individual is assigned.
  • Ability to teach and evaluate adult learners in an online learning environment.
  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, as may have been gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, community-engaged work, or other comparable experience.
  • Experience designing, teaching, and assessing online, hybrid, asynchronous, synchronous, or bichronous courses.
  • Experience teaching accelerated online courses or courses serving working adult learners, transfer students, and other post-traditional student populations.
  • Experience with Canvas or comparable learning management systems.
  • Experience with accessible course design, inclusive pedagogy, universal design for learning, and culturally sustaining teaching practices.
  • Expertise in inter/transdisciplinary and decolonial pedagogies.
  • Experience teaching courses that meet Ethnic Studies, general education, or upper-division writing/inquiry learning outcomes.

Qualifications

  • M.A. or other appropriate advanced degree in Native American and Indigenous Studies or a closely related field.

  • L-A / Range 2: $2279 per WTU
  • L-B / Range 3: $2497 per WTU
  • L-C / Range 4: $3146 per WTU
  • L-D / Range 5: $3977 per WTU
