Job Description

The RF Systems Engineering SME (part time on call) will provide telecommunications engineering support to the Near Space Network (NSN) project. This primarily involves leading/helping tactical and strategic planning, scoping of next generation architectures, designs and implementation plans for new projects, and by directly supporting the government in reconciling products generated by contractors.

This support is to ensure continuity of key in-progress efforts and planning, and may include but not be limited to the following:

  • Contribute to the risk and issue management processes, and the logical and systematic capture and refinement of concepts into total system solutions that are considerate of constraining factors.
  • Support requirement definition/analysis, specifications/design of ground segment/component key interfaces.
  • Contribute to the design and/or analysis of subsystem interfaces to ensure that subsystems are integrated and work together to form a viable complete system.
  • Develop technical documentation and procedures for installation, maintenance, operation, troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
  • Contribute to operational improvements recommendations to ongoing mission operations.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering from an accredited institution, or equivalent years of practical experience.
  • 25 plus years in a technical/leadership role supporting NASA/TDRS Mission Operations and Communications.
  • Possess technical expertise and leadership abilities to interact with senior NASA management at GSFC and NASA HQ.
  • Possess significant working knowledge of mission operations, developing studies, and recommending operational improvements.
  • Extensive experience with ground systems and the systems integration of hardware and software used to evaluate and meet TDRS and NASA mission requirements.
  • Knowledge of Command and Control Systems in support of real-time operations (command and data connections configuration).
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to pass a Government background investigation.
  • Security Clearance: Secret.
  • Minimum of 15 years with TDRS system engineering and operations.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

Desired Skills

  • Working knowledge of GSFC engineering development practices is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications theory and the project customer's systems and interfaces.
  • Familiarity with NASA Spectrum Management policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of customer's previously completed and on-going projects, and operational familiarity with NASA standards and processes.
  • Working knowledge of the project's Configuration Management and Sustaining Engineering practices.
