Music Therapist

About the role

This position provides therapeutic and evidence-based interventions to meet the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual, and cultural needs of patients as a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Responsibilities include developing treatment plans, implementing and evaluating music therapy interventions, and ensuring safe and appropriate therapeutic services.

Responsibilities

• Use music therapy interventions to treat patients according to individualized treatment plans.
• Develop and implement individualized treatment to meet the needs of each patient and therapeutic milieu served.
• Perform assessments to determine deficits, strengths, functioning needs, and precautions addressable through music therapy.
• Determine the role of music therapy in treatment, establish treatment goals, and formulate intervention strategies based on assessed needs.
• Systematic evaluation of therapy results, documentation, and patient discharge planning.
• Participate as an active member of the treatment team.
• Engage in department/unit initiatives for service delivery, quality improvement, and policies and procedures.
• Evaluate and assist in the procurement of needed resources.
• May assist in orientation, supervision, and professional development of new staff, students, and music therapy interns.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in music therapy or a Music Therapy equivalency.
• Board certification (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
• Ability to articulate the purpose, goals, function, and value of music therapy to patients, families, and the interdisciplinary treatment team.
• Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
• Care appropriate to the population served.
• Ability to implement proper treatment interventions based on assessed needs and limitations.
• Communicate with patients and families regarding program structure and treatment plans, monitor progress, and modify services as needed.
• Abide by established hospital policies and procedures.
• Monitor safety and foresee problems to prevent crises; address and resolve crisis situations involving patients when required.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including principles of life span growth and development.
• Assess data regarding patient status and provide care as described in department policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in music therapy.
• Two years of related experience.
• Utah State Certified Music Therapist (SCMT) acquired through DOPL.
• Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Card through the American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting. Employee may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care.
