Position Summary
Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications.
About the Role
Faculty member may be responsible for teaching classes in Music Appreciation, adhering to the stated course objectives, content and delivery.
Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities
- Facilitate learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve student success
- Works to create a supportive, student-centered learning environment both in the classroom and outside of it, particularly by being responsive to students needs
- Coincides with departmental and College procedures
- Maintains accurate records of student progress and adheres to college, State, and Federal deadlines for submitting reports and records related to student learning and student outcomes
- Supports and implements an appropriate use of technology in the curriculum
- Maintains an ongoing program of professional development that encompasses both subject matter currency as well as pedagogy
- Participates in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the college and its constituents such as presentations at conferences in the discipline, presentations at faculty workshops, writing and publishing in journals, books, etc.
- Participates in collegial initiatives and activities at the discipline, division, Academic Affairs and College-wide levels
- May be invited to attend and participate in College-level, divisional and discipline faculty meetings
- Assists the Dean and cooperates with colleagues in curriculum planning and development for the discipline
- Invited to participate in graduation activities
- Where applicable, supports the work of advisory committees to include incorporating their suggestions and concerns into curriculum
- Adheres to and supports College policies and procedures, goals and objectives
- Exercises stewardship of college facilities and materials
- Supports efforts with Student Services, Continuing Education, and Workforce Development to create a successful learning institution
- Be a positive spokesperson for the College when interacting with members of the community
- Communicates respectfully and effectively using reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with students, faculty, staff, and administration
- Implements appropriate measures to minimize/eliminate safety risks and hazards and creates a safe learning environment for students
Minimum Requirements
- Masters degree in Music, Music Education, Master of Arts in Music, Doctorate of Musical Arts, or Doctorate in Music Theory from an accredited institution
- Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Higher education teaching experience in voice/choral or instrumental/band, music technologies, music business, or other specialty music courses
- Experience utilizing technology to enhance teaching (i.e., online/digital resources & course management software, Canvas)
