About the role

The Music Instructor, Adult Day Services plans, organizes, or directs music therapy activities designed to positively influence patients' psychological or behavioral status. The Licensed Professional Music Therapist develops a person-centered, evidence-based, and personalized Music Therapy curriculum promoting individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. The role uses music therapeutically to address behavioral, social skills and interaction, psychological, communicative, physical, sensory-motor, repetitive/stereotypic, emotional regulation, and/or cognitive functioning. The therapist promotes activities enhancing wellness, managing stress, expressing feelings, enhancing memory, and improving communication. The incumbent engages service recipients in small and large group activities, leisure, and educational activities.

The professional integrates research findings into practice and performs tasks consistent with HIPAA laws and agency guidelines. The role practices under the guidelines of the CBMT Code of Professional Practice, AMTA Standards of Clinical Practice, AMTA Professional Competencies, and the AMTA Code of Ethics. The incumbent demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the theories and ethical skills used in Music Therapy.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct music therapy activities to positively influence patients' psychological or behavioral status.
• Develop a person-centered, evidence-based, and personalized Music Therapy curriculum.
• Address individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship using music to target behavioral, social, psychological, communicative, physical, sensory-motor, repetitive/stereotypic, emotional regulation, and cognitive functioning.
• Promote activities that enhance wellness, manage stress, express feelings, enhance memory, and improve communication.
• Engage service recipients in small and large group activities, leisure, and educational activities.
• Integrate research findings into practice while adhering to HIPAA laws and agency guidelines.
• Adhere to CBMT Code of Professional Practice, AMTA Standards of Clinical Practice, AMTA Professional Competencies, and AMTA Code of Ethics.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Music Therapy theories and ethical skills.
• Operate manual devices such as hydraulic lifts, wheelchair lifts, and vehicle doors for transporting service recipients.
• Apply Agency Training Crisis Management Verbal and Physical Techniques during a crisis, consistent with training and agency policies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an AMTA-approved institution, or its equivalent, from a program approved by the AMTA within an accredited educational institution.
• Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) and in good standing with the National Music Therapy Registry.
• Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities or a related field.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Valid New Jersey driver’s license and abstract (not to exceed 5 points), with the ability to meet agency insurability requirements.
• Complete State/Federal Criminal Background checks and Central Registry checks.

Physical Demands

• Maintain a stationary position (standing and sitting) for extended periods.
• Move, traverse, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms.
• Carry and lift up to 35 pounds.
• Squat and drive a 6-person passenger van.
• Operate manual devices such as hydraulic lifts and wheelchair lifts.
• Dexterity with wrists and fingers to access, key, and sort electronic information or file documents.
• View computer and/or electronic devices for extended periods.

This position requires duties in indoor and/or outdoor settings where exposure to weather elements, dirt, dust, unpleasant smells, and/or loud noises is possible, including occasional temperature fluctuations.
