About the role
The Museum Store Assistant supports the daily operation of the MIT Museum Store, which provides earned revenue to advance the Museum’s mission of making research and innovation accessible to all.
Responsibilities
- Assist customers in the store: answer questions, share product knowledge, and make recommendations
- Ring up museum store purchases
- Retrieve, count, price, and store incoming merchandise shipments
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of two stockrooms
- Replenish store stock levels throughout the day
- Straighten displays
- Open and close the store as needed, including operating the cash register/POS system and securing all entrances and exits
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent education
- Excellent communication skills and enjoyment of working with the public
- Ability to work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision
- High energy and adaptability to an ever-changing environment
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, regularly and repeatedly lift up to 30 lbs., occasionally ascend/descend a ladder, and move about a crowded store and two stockrooms
- Good design sense and an understanding of basic merchandising principles
- Basic computer skills
- Weekend availability required
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in specialty retail, hospitality, or museums and attractions
- Experience with Counterpoint POS or equivalent system
