About the role

The mission of the Gaston County Museum is to interpret the art and history of Gaston County and the region through education, preservation, and collection.

Responsibilities

• Greet museum visitors and provide an overview of current exhibits and attractions.
• Record statistical data pertaining to visitation and guest interaction with exhibits.
• Answer and transfer all incoming calls for staff.
• Maintain daily operations of the museum store: assist shoppers, sell merchandise, stock merchandise, take inventory, and perform other incidental museum shop duties as assigned.
• Monitor exhibits and displayed items by personal observation and via remote cameras to ensure the safety and security of museum collection pieces as well as items on loan to the museum.
• Open all museum facilities and perform any needed exhibit setup at the beginning of the day.
• Secure the museum at closing by locking buildings and activating the alarm system.
• Provide guided tours/gallery talks at the museum as assigned and scheduled by the Community Engagement Manager.
• Assist staff in education programs, museum special events, and collection research projects as assigned by the Community Engagement Manager.
• Assist staff in setting up for scheduled events and providing routine maintenance duties including, but not limited to, changing light bulbs, moving tables, and light gallery cleaning.

Minimum Qualifications

• A high school diploma or GED equivalency required.
• At least one year of experience working in customer service, preferably in a museum environment.
• Good writing and communication skills and a willingness to speak to groups.
• Ability to work a varying schedule and to stand or sit while working.
• Ability to lift 25 lbs and climb stairs.

Additional Information

The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment. If the position requires working with children, the County will require a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI in accordance with applicable state statutes.
