About the Role

The Museum Aide–Museum Interpreter is a part-time, seasonal position working approximately 20 hours per week through December 2026. The interpreter’s primary function is to research, write, conduct, and support a wide range of interpretive programs, including historic skill workshops, site tours, school field trips, special events, and similar. Additional duties include visitor services such as admission and gift shop sales, light cleaning, gardening, and special project work. This position reports to the Curator of Education.

Typical schedule: Tuesday–Friday, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM, with occasional weekends or evenings based on school groups, special events, or rentals.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and assists museum visitors, answers general questions, and provides exhibit information.
  • Serves as lobby receptionist, answers the main telephone line, and assists the public with questions.
  • Operates point-of-sale systems and handles admissions or gift shop transactions.
  • Performs daily cash counts for deposit.
  • Monitors museum galleries to ensure the safety and security of exhibits and guests.
  • Assists with setting up and taking down exhibits and event materials.
  • Supports educational programs, tours, and special events.
  • Cleans and sanitizes high-traffic areas on a rotating basis.
  • Unlocks and locks the museum and turns gallery exhibit lights on and off daily.
  • Conducts primary and secondary source research for programs, workshops, and special projects.
  • Leads formal and informal interpretive programs such as tours, workshops, and school programs for diverse audiences at museum sites and external locations (e.g., schools, fairs).
  • Safely learns and demonstrates historic skills (e.g., cooking, fiber arts, blacksmithing, woodworking, printing) to various audiences.
  • Assists in creating interpretive media, including social media posts and videos.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • At least six (6) months of experience in customer service, retail, or front desk operations or any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that enable successful performance of essential job functions.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  • Basic historic research and content writing skills.

  • Comfort engaging diverse groups of visitors, including children and seniors.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and cash handling.
  • Knowledge of and interest in Greeley, Weld County, and Colorado history.
  • Knowledge of or interest in historic skillsets (e.g., fibercraft, historic cooking, blacksmithing, printing).
  • Experience working with audiences from children to seniors in informal or formal learning environments.
  • Experience in third-person interpretation techniques.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to learn new software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including facilitating interaction, communication, and teamwork.
  • Excellent oral, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Professional appearance, demeanor, and effort.

Preferred: Certified Interpretive Guide Training.

Schedule

  • Must be comfortable working in historical clothing.

Work Environment

  • Primarily seated or standing at a desk, with occasional bending, twisting, or stooping.
  • Work is performed on an 8-acre outdoor site with varying weather conditions.
  • Requires vision, hearing, and speech sufficient for effective communication with visitors.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds unassisted.
  • Stamina to stand and walk for long periods.
