Duties and Responsibilities
- Water Distribution & Collection:
- Assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and collection systems.
- Respond to water service disruptions such as leaks, equipment malfunctions, and maintenance needs.
- Respond to collection system backups, flooding, and failure.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance for water lines, hydrants, lift stations, valves and related infrastructure.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including safety protocols municipal procedures, and map interpretation.
- Perform general maintenance tasks such as cleaning, minor street repair, and repair of municipal water and wastewater systems.
- Operate equipment to jet sewer mains for routine cleaning, blockage removal, and CCTV video recording.
- Perform hydro excavation (Hydro Dig) to safely expose utilities and dig trenches for pipe repairs utilizing the vac trailer.
- Work collaboratively with team members to complete assignments efficiently and safely.
- Assume on call in a rotating schedule.
- Follow all safety protocols and participate in required safety and professional development training.
- Use shoring and air monitors to ensure safe trench and confined space work practices.
- Maintain accurate records of work complete, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
- Promptly report equipment damage, safety hazards, or disruptions in service to appropriate personnel.
- Assist with seasonal tasks such as snow removal and special city events such as Public Works Week.
- Attend ongoing training, including heavy equipment, confined space, CDL, flagger, trench, CPR/AED, and other courses as assigned.
- Attend ongoing professional training to maintain operator distribution I and/or collections I licenses, renewing on time with the state of Colorado.
- Develops skills in locating underground utility lines using appropriate tools and techniques.
- MSW III:
- Provide guidance and mentorship to MSW I and MSW II staff.
- Direct small crews during fieldwork, projects, and emergency responses.
- Share technical knowledge and support standardization of work practices.
- Assist with inventory, supply tracking, and material ordering.
- Research and evaluate costs for materials, equipment, and contracted services to ensure best value and compliance with purchasing regulations.
- Initiate and process purchase requests, purchase orders, and procurement documentation for assigned projects or departments.
- Prepare and submit purchase card receipt statements to the Administrative Assistant in accordance with established policies, ensuring accuracy, proper documentation and timeliness.
- Collaborate with the Administrative Assistant to review line item budget and make recommendations to the supervisor.
- Assist with planning and prioritizing of scheduled and unscheduled utility projects.
- Respond to water main breaks, backups, and other utility emergencies.
- Maintain accurate documentation of labor, materials, and equipment used.
- Communicate professionally with the public regarding service requests and concerns.
Education and Experience
- MSW I:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Some experience in maintenance, construction, utilities, or related field preferred but not required.
- Some experience working with water distribution or wastewater collection systems is a plus.
- MSW II:
- Two (2) years of experience in Utilities with the City of Northglenn or equivalent public works or municipal services experience.
- Hands-on experience with water distribution and collection systems, including maintenance and repair.
- MSW III:
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in Utilities with the City of Northglenn or equivalent public works or municipal services experience.
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory responsibilities in the field.
- A minimum of Level III certification in Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection, or an equivalent combination of Distribution and Collection licenses totaling Level III (e.g., Distribution II + Collection I, Distribution I + Collection II).
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with clean driving record.
Supplemental Information
- WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, may be extreme at times.
- MUST BE ABLE TO LIFT AND CARRY UP TO 100 POUNDS WITH ASSISTANCE.
- REQUIRES BENDING, KNEELING, STANDING, WALKING, AND OPERATING EQUIPMENT FOR LONG PERIODS.
- ABILITY TO WORK IN CONFINED SPACES AND HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS MUST BE PERFORMED USING REQUIRED PPE AS OUTLINED IN JOB SAFETY ANALYSES (JSAs).
- MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR EMERGENCY CALL-OUTS, STANDBY/ON-CALL ROTATION IS REQUIRED.
- This position may be assigned other duties consistent with the job classification.
Benefits Vary Depending on the Status of the Position
- Regular Full-Time - Employee works in a position that is classified as 40 hours per week. Eligible for full benefit package including medical, dental, life and LTD insurance; pension and general leave and optional benefits.
- Regular Part-Time 30+ - Employee works in a position that is classified as 30+ hours per week. City pays contribution toward employee only medical and dental insurance. Employee can pay the difference to cover spouse and/or children. Life & LTD insurance coverage is provided. Employee participates in the City's pension plan and the City contributes to the plan. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and optional benefits.
- Regular Part-Time 20+ - Employee works in a position that is classified as 20+ hours per week but less than 30 hours. City pays contribution toward employee only medical insurance. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and the City pays 3.75% toward deferred compensation and optional benefits.
- Regular Part-Time - (less than 20 hours/wk) - Employee works is a position that is classified as less than 20 hours per week. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and the City pays 3.75% toward deferred compensation.
- Part-Time (No Benefits) - Employee works in a position that is classified as a "no benefit" position (i.e., Fitness Instructor, Scorekeeper, Substitute Lifeguard). Employee is not eligible for benefits and pays 7.5% toward deferred compensation.
- Seasonal/Temporary - Employee works in a position that is classified as a short-term position, is not eligible for benefits and pays 7.5% toward deferred compensation.
