Multimodality Technologist

About the role

A Multi-Modality Technologist performs imaging procedures while adhering to established guidelines and assists in the training of new technologists. The role works under the supervision of the modality supervisory technologist and modality medical director, contributing to the efficient operation of the department and ensuring quality and continuity of patient care.

Responsibilities

• Perform all technical procedures within respective modality sections as described in the Radiology Policy Manual.
• Meet the technical competency requirements for the position.
• Maintain effective working relationships with all staff.
• Participate in professional education programs, patient/staff safety initiatives, and quality assurance/improvement activities.
• Adhere to established policies and procedures, ensuring open communication with departmental leadership regarding patient care delivery, technical operations, and regulatory compliance.
• Ensure patients understand the procedure to be performed and communicate relevant information compassionately and professionally.
• Coordinate patient flow by monitoring hospital information and scheduling systems.
• Participate in quality assurance/improvement programs and adhere to infection control, environmental care, radiation safety, and general safety procedures.
• Monitor and perform required quality control on imaging instrumentation, survey meters, calibrators, and other devices.
• Perform technical procedures associated with respective modalities, including intravenous and intramuscular injections as required.
• Perform routine backup, transfer, archive, and retrieval of imaging studies, maintaining necessary records and reports.
• Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulatory, accreditation, and organizational guidelines for radiology pharmaceuticals, supplies, and materials.
• Help establish an orderly, clean, and professional environment, maintaining departmental stocks and supplies.
• Handle business and patient information securely, maintaining confidentiality.
• Perform additional duties as needed.

Modality-Specific Responsibilities

• Angiography (Interventional Radiology and OR Hybrid Room), CT, MRI, Radiography Technologists: Establish intravenous access; administer imaging contrast media as directed by departmental policies.
• Angiography (OR Hybrid Room): Document procedural information (hemodynamics, inventory usage) and images via cardiovascular information systems (C-PACS).
• Nuclear Medicine Technologists: Establish intravenous access; administer radiopharmaceutical imaging agents as directed by departmental policies.
• Angiography, CT, Mammography, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Radiography, and Ultrasonography Technologists: Apply room/cylinder oxygen via mask/nasal cannula per order.

Modality-Specific Roles

• Angiography Technologist (Interventional Radiology and OR Hybrid Room): Perform radiographic procedures under supervision.
• CT Technologist: Perform computed tomography procedures and assist in training new technologists.
• Mammography Technologist: Perform screening and diagnostic mammographic procedures, bone densitometry, and may encompass Radiography Technologist responsibilities.
• MRI Technologist: Perform magnetic resonance imaging procedures.
• Nuclear Medicine Technologist: Perform nuclear medicine procedures.
• Radiography Technologist: Perform radiographic procedures.
• Ultrasonography Technologist: Perform ultrasonography procedures, including abdominal, gynecological, O/B, and vascular exams.

Qualifications

• Current AHA BLS certification.
• Qualifications as described by modality below. A Multi-Modality Technologist must work as needed in two (2) or more of the following modalities:

Radiography Technologist

• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license.
• Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation.
• For recent graduates: ARRT registered certification eligibility in Radiography with RT(R); must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.

Computed Tomography Technologist

• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license, and/or Nuclear Medicine license, and/or Radiation Therapy license.
• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography Computed Tomography license.
• Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation and Computed Tomography with RT(CT) designation; and/or Current NMTCB registered certification in Nuclear Medicine with CNMT designation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist

• Current ARRT registered certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging with RT(MR) designation.
• Preferred additional ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation.
• Preferred additional Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license.

Mammography Technologist

• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license and Mammography license.
• Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation and Mammography with RT(M) designation.

Angiography (Interventional Radiology) Technologist

• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license.
• Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation.
• Preferred additional ARRT registered certification in Vascular-Interventional radiography with RT(VI), Cardiac-Interventional radiography with RT(CI), or Cardio-Vascular interventional radiography with RT(CV) designation.
• Current ACLS certification with American Heart Association obtained within 6 months of hire.

Angiography (OR Hybrid Room) Technologist

• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license.
• Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation.
• Preferred additional ARRT registered certification in Vascular-Interventional radiography with RT(VI), Cardiac-Interventional radiography with RT(CI), or Cardio-Vascular interventional radiography with RT(CV) designation.
• Current ACLS certification with American Heart Association obtained within 6 months of hire.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist

• Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Nuclear Medicine license.
• Current ARRT registered certification in Nuclear Medicine with RT(N) designation; and/or Current NMTCB registered certification in Nuclear Medicine Technology with CNMT designation.
• For technologists performing SPECT-CT: Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Nuclear Medicine license SPECT-CT endorsement, and/or CT endorsement, and/or Radiography (Full/General) license.

Ultrasound Technologist

• Current ARDMS registered certification in Abdomen with RDMS(AB) designation and/or Obstetrics and Gynecology with RDMS(OB/GYN) designation and/or ARRT registered certification in Sonography with RT(S) designation.
