About the role
AZPM is seeking a Multimedia Journalist II to serve as its Politics & Government Reporter, focusing on local government, public policy, and political issues affecting Southern Arizona.
Responsibilities
- Research, develop, write, and produce two daily news stories for public radio and digital audiences.
- Develop and produce a minimum of three longer feature stories that tell deeper, bigger stories than daily coverage can accommodate.
- Produce high-quality work that is accurate, fair, balanced, and professional.
- Operate field audio equipment and audio editing systems.
- Take digital photos or video for all stories for digital use.
- Adhere to AZPM’s Code of Editorial Ethics and Practices and AZPM’s Editorial Standards.
- Maintain daily deadlines.
- Cultivate sources and resources in the areas of politics, local government, public policy, and government affairs – including connections to local government, businesses, and non-profits, as well as exploring the connection to these topics of state and federal laws and policies, finding local stories that illustrate how changes in these policies affect local issues.
- Work with other editorial partners when assigned.
- Adapt and publish broadcast content for digital and social media platforms, incorporating audio, data visualizations, links, charts, maps, and other multimedia elements as appropriate.
- Serve as a substitute/back-up anchor for radio and television newscasts on as-needed basis.
- Operate University of Arizona vehicles to travel to conduct interviews and/or capture audio.
- Collaborate with other AZPM reporters and producers on enterprise stories.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of journalistic ethics, standards, and best practices.
- Knowledge of multimedia storytelling techniques, including audio, video, and digital content production.
- Working knowledge of audio editing systems, online research tools, and social media platforms.
- Ability to research, write, edit, and produce accurate and engaging news content.
- Ability to conduct interviews, cultivate sources, and gather information from a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with reporters, producers, editors, and external partners.
