About the role

Peter Scalamandre & Sons, Inc. (PSSI) is one of the New York metropolitan area's leading heavy civil general contractors, with more than a century of experience delivering major public infrastructure. PSSI builds and rehabilitates the region's critical assets — transit stations, bridges, highways, airports, utilities, and power and water treatment facilities — and has extensive experience working in deep coordination with the area's major transit authorities and public agencies on complex, high-profile programs, including design-build delivery in active rail environments. Our vertically integrated operations — a large-scale equipment fleet, trucking, concrete, and crushing capabilities — allow PSSI to self-perform demanding heavy civil scopes and give our teams direct control over schedule, quality, and means and methods on the region's most challenging projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support field supervision in planning, coordinating, and documenting daily construction activities, including work performed during track outages and off-hour access windows
  • Prepare, track, and manage RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and as-built documentation
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, track installed quantities and production rates, and assist with monthly payment requisitions
  • Coverage with subcontractors, suppliers, surveyors, and third-party utilities to keep work fronts active and conflicts resolved
  • Assist quality control staff with inspections, material testing coordination, and non-conformance tracking
  • Support schedule updates by reporting field progress and identifying potential delays or interferences
  • Maintain daily reports, photo documentation, and force account/T&M records
  • Aid in site safety compliance, including railroad roadway worker protection requirements, OSHA standards, and agency-specific safety programs
  • Assist with punch list management and project closeout documentation

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of project engineering or field engineering experience on heavy civil construction projects
  • Working knowledge of construction documentation processes (RFIs, submittals, daily reports, quantity tracking)
  • Proficiency with standard construction software (Microsoft Office; Procore, Primavera P6, or similar a plus)
  • Ability to work on-site full-time, including nights, weekends, and outage windows as dictated by track access

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience on MTA agency or other transit/rail projects strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with design-build project delivery
  • Experience with work in active railroad rights-of-way, including flagging and outage coordination
  • EIT certification or progress toward a NYS Professional Engineer license
