About the role

This is a Forensic Scientist III classification responsible for the operational administration of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The position ensures the functionality of the Division's LIMS software is configured, implemented, maintained, and upgraded over time to achieve long-term success. Responsibilities include user management, maintenance of user standard operating procedures, and generating reports from LIMS. The role ensures casework throughout the Division is managed efficiently, minimizing backlogs and turnaround times.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Provide user administration support for the Forensic Sciences Division (FSD) and its customers.
  • Monitor the Division's case management processes.
  • Perform business analysis functions for the FSD.
  • Act as a business liaison between the FSD and ITD for LIMS-related topics.
  • Compile and report data captured within LIMS.
  • Engage in professional development activities.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, genetics, medical technology, pharmaceutical science, or a related physical, natural, or forensic science from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years of experience in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence, including experience providing testimony as an expert witness in moot or criminal court.

Notes:

  • Additional experience performing comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence, including expert testimony, may substitute year-for-year for the required education and up to two years of the required experience.
  • Experience at another accredited crime laboratory performing equivalent work may substitute year-for-year for the required experience.
  • A Master’s degree in the specified fields may substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A Doctorate degree in the specified fields may substitute for two years of the required experience.

Qualifications

  • Experience writing SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and validate data from relational databases.
  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining SAP Crystal reports, including gathering user requirements and translating business needs into technical report specifications.
  • Experience using Tableau to connect data sources, develop dashboards and visualizations, and present data meaningfully for end users.
  • Experience serving as a systems administrator for a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), configuring users, roles, permissions, workflows, or system settings.

Special Requirements

  • Employees may be assigned duties requiring the operation of a motor vehicle and must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must possess the certification or license required by the governing body of the forensic discipline associated with the job duties.
  • Subject to call-in 24 hours a day; must provide a telephone number for contact.
  • Subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09.
  • Candidates will undergo an initial drug screening, physical examination, DNA sample submission, and a complete criminal background investigation, including a polygraph examination, before permanent appointment. A criminal conviction may disqualify the candidate.
