Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, candidates must meet any screen‑out element listed and demonstrate through experience and training that they possess the knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which they are applying. Emphasis is placed on how the quality of experience was gained, not necessarily the length of time. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) that builds relevant competencies.
Physical Effort
The employee exerts moderate physical effort. Operating large vehicles and handling heavy loads requires upper‑body strength for steering, use of multiple hand and foot controls, and manipulation of dual braking systems to avoid jackknifing. Entering and exiting a cab positioned high above ground level, as well as bending, reaching, lifting, pulling, stooping, and securing cargo, also demand physical effort. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 70 lb and performs moderate effort when operating material‑handling equipment.
Working Conditions
The employee typically operates a vehicle while seated behind a steering wheel in an enclosed or covered cab, which may or may not have heating or air‑conditioning. Occasionally work is performed outdoors or in an enclosed structure for safety inspections, minor emergency repairs, or loading/unloading activities. Vehicles are operated in all weather conditions, in congested depot areas with frequent vehicle, material‑handling, rail, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic, and on public roadways day or night. Exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, noise, and the possibility of life‑threatening accidents, cuts, bruises, abrasions, and broken bones exists. Work may be performed inside/outside a warehouse that can be cold, damp, or hot, with potential injury from mechanical equipment, falling objects, shifting loads, or collisions.
