Essential Functions

  • Operates heavy and unique construction or maintenance equipment; high capacity dump trucks or truck and trailer requiring a Commercial Drivers license
  • Respond to after hours emergencies as directed and assist in emergency response activities related to system failures and/or crises
  • Performs the installation and repair of all public works utilities and other appurtenances using whatever methods, tools, and procedures are necessary to complete the task safely, properly, and proficiently
  • Operates heavy duty equipment for snow removal
  • Read and follow specifications on engineering blueprints, sketches, and diagrams of the water and sewer system and other related operations systems
  • Locate, operate, repair, and maintain underground utilities and controls related to the public works infrastructure
  • Performs minor maintenance functions on equipment, including but not limited to checking and maintaining air pressures and fluid levels, lubrication of mechanical joints by applying necessary greases, and routine cleaning of vehicle exterior and interior
  • Performs daily vehicle condition inspections and reports as required by law or Department policy
  • Performs tasks generally assigned to a laborer and/or skilled laborer such as: Installation of water systems, including pipe, valves, fire hydrants, pumps, meters and service lines
  • Identify and repair service line and water main leaks
  • Liquid detection with correlation and hydrophone equipment
  • Gate valve exercising with electric valve turner
  • Exercise of system blow-off valves, air-vacuum valves and inline valves
  • Perform annual fire hydrant inspections
  • Water meter repair and/or replacement
  • Unidirectional flushing
  • Maintenance and repair of fire hydrants
  • Mark underground water and sewer utilities for DigSafe
  • Maintain pump station, storage facilities, and headquarters. Such duties include mowing, snow removal, Cleaning, Painting, And Any Other Associated Tasks

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; and 2-4 years of experience at an accredited technical school or on-the-job training; experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment or the equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B Issued By The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts With Proper Endorsements Air brakes and tanker. Possession of a Drinking Water Supply Facilities Certified Grade D1 (OIT) Operator issued by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure within 1 (one) year of employment. With a Full - Drinking Water Supply Facilities Certified Grade D1 Operator issued by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure in 2 (two) years.
