This is a full-time position with the Department of Public Safety.
About the role
Motor Carrier Enforcement is a Division of the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The Motor Carrier Inspector performs regulatory and enforcement activities to ensure trucks and other carriers operate legally. Duties are performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including some weekends and holidays. Training and promotional opportunities are available.
Responsibilities
- Inspect and weigh commercial vehicles
- Review documents and issue permits
- Train and educate customers
- Take necessary enforcement action
- Complete required reports
- Communicate via Mobile Police Radio
- Administer preliminary breath tests
- Climb onto, around, or under tractor-trailer rigs and cargo to inspect and measure vehicles
- Lift 75 pounds or more
Requirements
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license
- Certification as a Motor Carrier Inspector
- Successful completion of North American Level I Standards Inspection Training within two years of employment
- Ability to:
- Deal tactfully and courteously with the public
- Compute fees using mathematical formulas and a calculator
- Maintain composure in stressful situations
- Take appropriate enforcement action
- Interpret and explain rules and regulations to drivers and transportation company officials
- Recognize and act upon violations
- Communicate clearly and concisely on state laws, policies, and procedures
Qualifications
- Knowledge of:
- The transportation industry
- Mechanical characteristics of commercial vehicles, including load factors
- Commercial drivers’ license requirements
- Vehicle safety inspection procedures
