Mortgage Underwriting Manager

About the role
The Underwriting Manager leads the daily operations of the underwriting team, overseeing underwriting decisions, pre-approvals, and loan-specific reviews to ensure accuracy, quality, and timely execution. This role partners closely with Sales, Processing, Closing, and other cross-functional teams to drive operational excellence, maintain regulatory and investor compliance, and promote consistent underwriting practices. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with strong mortgage underwriting expertise, a passion for developing high-performing teams, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service while supporting the company's growth objectives.
Responsibilities
- Manage underwriting department’s personnel including training, hiring, coaching, mentoring, and setting operations and service goals
- Participate in the establishment, monitoring, and enforcement of clear underwriting metrics that balance throughput with loan file quality
- Champion best-in-class service levels that deliver on our brand promise of “fast, simple, and dependable”
- Provide recommendations to management on process improvement opportunities within the department and across applicable areas
- Collaborate with departments across the organization to foster streamlined processes and drive quality improvement
- Review daily, weekly, and monthly productivity, pipelines, and turn times, and distribute accordingly to maintain clean pipelines and saleable loans
- Provide feedback to management on productivity, quality, and areas of concern
- Participate in the continued development of loan guidelines and ensure originated loans fully conform to our guidelines and the contracted reps and warranties
- Focus on continual operational improvement with automation, process mapping, and personnel training
- Serve as the primary and first point of contact to answer questions regarding guidelines and SOPs, and escalate issues to senior management when necessary

- Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a Mortgage Underwriter or related position
- 1+ years of supervisory experience
- Advanced manual underwriting skills and independent decision-making ability
- Proven ability to manage time-sensitive, high-complexity pipelines
- Strong initiative, reliability, and commitment to quality and team success
- Technology-savvy with experience working across multiple underwriting systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High School Diploma or GED required
Qualifications
- Underwriting experience with Non-QM and DSCR Loans
- Associate and/or bachelor's degree in business or a related industry area

Pay
$105,000–$130,000 annually (Exempt)
