Mortgage Originator

About the role

Provide excellent member service to current and potential Credit Union members by notifying them of mortgage product details, evaluating each member’s situation, and suggesting the most appropriate mortgage product. Duties also include assisting members with mortgage applications, reviewing for completeness, ensuring required documents are provided, and sending initial disclosures. The Mortgage Originator maintains a loan application database, coordinates with Private Mortgage Insurance companies when applicable, and performs other assigned duties.

Responsibilities

• Meet with loan applicants to identify needs and collect information to start the mortgage process.
• Acquire authorization and obtain credit reports; review credit data to determine eligibility and suitable products.
• Upload all data into the loan operating system, ensuring RESPA and HMDA information is recorded properly.
• Determine loan amount, loan‑to‑value, and allowable debt‑to‑income based on product guidelines.
• Utilize the appropriate underwriting engine to validate conditional approval or denial.
• Issue conditional pre‑approval to purchase‑money applicants when appropriate.
• Deliver loan estimates, applications, and disclosures within required timeframes to remain compliant.
• Explain Credit Union membership, appraisal fees, and set timelines to applicants.
• Gather necessary documents prior to submission.
• Maintain a company‑provided cell phone with accessibility during and after working hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Perform tasks and duties during non‑traditional working hours to meet member and company needs.
• Develop and maintain realtor relationships.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education equivalent to a four‑year high school education plus some additional post‑secondary technical coursework.
• 2–4 years of residential mortgage experience.
• Working knowledge of mortgage processes and loans (conventional, VA, FHA).

• Proficiency with PC, calculator, and office equipment; strong customer service and telephone skills; well‑organized and detail‑oriented.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
• Ability to maintain current knowledge of department changes, processes, and procedures.

Schedule

Availability required during non‑traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, with a company‑provided cell phone for accessibility after regular working hours.
