About the role

Under the supervision of a RN, the Monitor Technician monitors, recognizes, and interprets cardiac rhythms while identifying deviations in patients' baseline, and changes in SP02. The Monitor Technician notifies the registered nurse of changes to a patient's status and initiates the appropriate emergency response by the critical care team in the event of a lethal arrhythmia, including irregular heart rhythms and cardiac arrest.

Responsibilities

  • Records information in patient's log and maintains accurate, neat account of patient's cardiac monitoring status during episode of care.
  • Identifies and records patient's rhythm and changes in patient rhythm and condition.
  • Updates patient's records with all readings taken from the heart monitor or EKGs.
  • Identifies arrhythmias, deviation in each patient's baseline, signs of patient deterioration, and intervenes to ensure patient safety.
  • Activates emergency response or rapid response for lethal arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.
  • Documents the electrocardiograph tracings of patients on telemetry monitors.
  • Identifies and corrects for artifacts.
  • Performs continual and simultaneous surveillance for the operation of complex cardiac monitoring systems, including ECG rhythm screens, computerized dysrhythmia detection system and rhythm printers.
  • Attaches electrode to patients' bodies to record electrical impulses from the heart to perform continuous ECG Monitoring.
  • Reports abnormal or change in patient's telemetry monitoring to nursing staff or immediate supervisor or designated chain of command.

Requirements

  • Vocation Technical education (Required)
  • BLS American Heart E-Card (BLS AHA ECARD) - American Heart Association
  • BLS American Heart RQI E-Card (BLS AHA-RQI ECARD) - American Heart Association
  • BLS Cert American Heart_non ecard (BLS AHA) - American Heart Association
  • BLS Certification Grace (BLS GRACE) - Employee Grace Period for Essential Credential
  • BLS Cert Red Cross (BLS RC) - Red Cross
  • One (1) year of experience as a Monitor Technician required. Two (2) years experience in lieu of Vocation Technical (VOTECH) required.
  • Monitor Technician certification required.
  • Electrocardiogram Competency (ECG/EKG) required.
  • Successful completion of ECG/EKG interpretation coursework required.

Additional Information

Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the heart in relation to waves, complexes, time, and voltage as shown through the conduction system and strip interpretation. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Requires sitting for a long period of time monitoring and interpreting patients' cardiac rhythms. Knowledge of telemetry services. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in the workload and work schedules.
