About the role
The Monitor Technician works collaboratively with the nursing staff. The primary responsibility is continuous surveillance of patients being telemetry monitored.
Responsibilities
- Identify and immediately report significant changes in heart rate, heart rate abnormalities and arrhythmias to the nursing staff.
- Initiate “Code Blue” for life-threatening rhythm changes.
- Differentiates between artifact, leads off, alerts and lethal alarms.
- Escalates and prioritizes communication to nursing staff regarding telemetry alerts and alarms.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to nursing staff, co-workers and physicians.
- Remains alert and attentive to assigned patient rhythms.
- Performs hand off to oncoming shift, detailing pertinent patient telemetry issues.
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Notifies the nursing staff, Clinical Engineering, Director/Manager or Administrative Coordinator of system malfunction.
- Demonstrate an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful conditions.
- Maintain a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of monitors utilized.
- Assist in orienting and training of new staff.
- Maintain confidentiality of patients, employees and hospital related activities.
Requirements
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of hospital-based telemetry class and passing of post-test is required within 30 days of hire and annually. Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, input data.
