About the role

The Monitor Technician works collaboratively with the nursing staff. The primary responsibility is continuous surveillance of patients being telemetry monitored.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and immediately report significant changes in heart rate, heart rate abnormalities and arrhythmias to the nursing staff.
  • Initiate “Code Blue” for life-threatening rhythm changes.
  • Differentiates between artifact, leads off, alerts and lethal alarms.
  • Escalates and prioritizes communication to nursing staff regarding telemetry alerts and alarms.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to nursing staff, co-workers and physicians.
  • Remains alert and attentive to assigned patient rhythms.
  • Performs hand off to oncoming shift, detailing pertinent patient telemetry issues.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Notifies the nursing staff, Clinical Engineering, Director/Manager or Administrative Coordinator of system malfunction.
  • Demonstrate an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful conditions.
  • Maintain a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of monitors utilized.
  • Assist in orienting and training of new staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patients, employees and hospital related activities.

Requirements

Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of hospital-based telemetry class and passing of post-test is required within 30 days of hire and annually. Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, input data.
