About the Organization

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is the nonprofit, applied research division of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Founded in 1934, GTRI has grown to more than 2,900 employees, supporting eight laboratories in over 20 locations around the country and performing over $940 million of problem-solving research annually for government and industry. GTRI's researchers combine science, engineering, economics, policy, and technical expertise to solve complex problems for the U.S. federal government, state, and industry.

Georgia Tech's mission is to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Its nine key values include excellence, diversity, collaboration, innovation, freedom of inquiry, community wellbeing, ethical action, and responsible stewardship.

About the Project/Unit

The M&S Engineer will support research and development projects in the Electromagnetic Warfare and Survivability Modeling and Simulation (EWSMS) Division under GTRI’s Electro-Optical Systems Lab (EOSL). The EWSMS Division provides modeling, simulation, and analysis of platform and system effectiveness and survivability in one-on-one, few-on-few, and many-on-many scenarios, as well as comprehensive kill chain analysis.

About the Role

The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer works closely with research, development, and testing teams to combine simulation modeling with data analytics to provide recommendations for optimizing system designs. Responsibilities include constructing computer simulation models, verifying and validating them, performing simulation experiments to predict system behaviors, and improving systems and processes.

The M&S Engineer should be familiar with core M&S concepts and techniques, including discrete event simulation, continuous simulation, agent-based modeling, distributed simulation, and conceptual modeling. They should also stay updated on new tools and languages, such as AFSIM, AnyLogic, Arena, ExtendSim, OpenFoam, OpenModelica, and NetLogo.

Responsibilities

  • Direct sponsor engagement and facilitate product or system requirements gathering and analysis.
  • Develop critical M&S inputs, including framework definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis, and implementation.
  • Conduct product or system design analysis, translating requirements into valid models and experimental designs for systems of moderate complexity.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements.
  • Implement approaches that foster reusability of existing M&S expressions.
  • Develop physics-based models representing sensors and weapons operating in national defense scenarios.
  • Develop and optimize detailed mathematical models representing missiles, aircraft, and vehicle signatures.
  • Leverage existing or develop new methods for analyzing various aspects of kill chains and kill webs.
  • Interface with high-performance computing clusters to execute large-scale simulation analysis.
  • Travel to sponsor locations to support meetings and attend test events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Workplace experience utilizing Python, C/C++, or Matlab.
  • Workplace experience with Linux operating systems.
  • Experience conducting modeling, simulation, and analysis for RF, EO, or IR systems using tools such as AFSIM, Benchmark, ESAMS, MOSAIC, ITASE, GTSIMS, Matlab, Python, or related languages.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Experience with Perl, Modtran, Fortran, or Ada.
  • Experience with Simulink.
  • A Master's degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or a related technical discipline.

Education and Experience

This position is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will depend on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks.

  • 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3 years of related experience with a Master’s degree in the same fields.
  • 0 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in the same fields.

Schedule

Travel requirements: <10% to 25%.
