Responsibilities

• Perform machine setups (calibration, cleaning, etc.) to start a production cycle, including loading and unloading work products manually or using appropriate equipment, controlling and adjusting machine functions, securing work pieces in fixtures, and observing machine operations.
• Operate special-purpose machines or equipment for production and cutting of customer parts, strictly adhering to client job specifications to ensure quality, and insert production materials in the correct machine parts to enhance output.
• Inspect and measure welded work pieces using instruments such as preset comparators, fixed gauges, calipers, and micrometers to verify conformance to customer specifications.
• Maintain welders and special-purpose machines by replacing worn accessories (e.g., collet pads, fixture pads), cleaning equipment, lubricating as needed, and performing other assigned maintenance duties.
• Ensure equipment operates properly and safely; report and repair equipment internally and externally with suppliers (e.g., plasma machine, oxy, crane, truck, dust collector, compressor, forklift). Troubleshoot machine problems to identify faults.
• Operate hand-held air-driven tools, electrical tools, tappers, forklift, and crane (required certifications must be obtained).
• Inspect parts with precision and measuring tools to meet requirements, customer specifications, and company policy.
• Test machines periodically to ensure proper operation, fix issues during shifts, check output for machine-related mistakes or flaws, and maintain records of approved/defective units, final products, and maintenance schedules.
• Study blueprints from work layouts to ensure production accuracy.
• Ensure timely preparation and availability of production materials to avoid shortages during production.
• Maintain activity logs and production records.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 1–2+ years of experience as a machine operator in a production/manufacturing setting.
• Completion of the established Skill Pie per location.
• Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers; highly organized.
• Working knowledge of diverse high-speed machinery and measurement tools (e.g., caliper, micrometer); ability to operate light equipment and mechanical devices.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain a positive attitude while providing exemplary customer service.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member to complete assignments within given parameters, prescribed routines, and standard practices.
• Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, exceptional judgment, dependability, excellent teamwork, and good time management.
• Creative problem-solving, professional competence, proactivity, and persistence.
• Forklift certification.
• Current/active driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3–5+ years of increasingly responsible experience as a machine operator in a production/manufacturing setting.
• Welder certification.
• Crane certification.

Working Conditions

Travel 10% of the time for meetings at other SSAB locations, deliveries, trainings, seminars, and conferences as needed.
