About the role

The Mock Trial Sponsor at Ames High School promotes greater understanding of and appreciation for the law, court procedures, and the American judicial system while developing students' life skills such as critical thinking, reading, speaking, and advocacy. This extracurricular sponsorship meets after school from September to March with occasional weekend competition events. Hours vary based on the needs of the position.

Responsibilities

• Conduct an equitable selection of the Mock Trial team that aligns with the goals of Ames High School and Ames Community School District.
• Facilitate students' understanding of witness statements and the legal system to present both the plaintiff and defense sides in a court of law.
• Supervise students during practices and competitions.
• Schedule activities for practices and competitions.
• Organize and execute fundraisers according to Ames CSD policies and procedures.
• Engage students in community service activities.
• Promote and attend tournaments.
• Maintain positive relationships with local judges, attorneys, and other school coaches to build a Mock Trial culture.
• Maintain documents including attendance records and field trip paperwork.
• Create a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment for all students.
• Follow the guidelines, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Ames Community School District.
• Ensure student members understand the expectations of the organization, represent excellence within the school, and serve as role models for the student body.
• Ensure continuous communication exists between the student body, faculty, and administration.

Qualifications

• Experience working with high school students preferred.

Pay

$3,586 stipend
