About the role

Evaluate the Orientation & Mobility needs of students with vision loss. Visit schools and/or off-campus settings to conduct evaluations and develop and implement sequential lessons in Orientation & Mobility (O&M) based on individual student needs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Orientation & Mobility skills to eligible students with vision loss
  • Select and utilize non-school locations for specific content areas
  • Serve on ARD committee, as necessary
  • Consult with teachers, vision staff and technicians, parents, and other professionals regarding the Orientation & Mobility needs of students and children with vision loss
  • Teach appropriate Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) skills to eligible students with vision loss
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
  • Comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personnel activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate
  • Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in a directly related field; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Current Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) from the Academy for the Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
  • Three years of satisfactory Orientation & Mobility experience
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in communicating with students, parents, professional staff, community members, and agencies serving individuals with vision loss
  • Demonstrate flexibility in working with diverse ages and populations across diverse settings
  • Must ride and teach public transportation skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility, focus, and adaptability to cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing world
  • Demonstrated willingness to remain current with the latest developments in the profession

Pay

Minimum Salary: $78,404.00
Median Salary: $94,084.00
