Mobile/Traveling Heavy Equipment Mechanic

About the Role

Performing preventative maintenance and repairs on intermodal heavy equipment in an outdoor environment. This position requires travel as needed for extended periods of time within the U.S., including the possibility of working at one specific location for extended durations.

Responsibilities

  • Read electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Repair and maintain heavy intermodal/industrial equipment
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair of systems and components
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Perform detailed equipment inspections and preventative maintenance following OEM specifications
  • Respond to customer-related equipment requests
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, health, and environmental regulations, policies, and procedures for a goal of zero incidents and injuries
  • Assist in delivering required training to ensure co-workers have the necessary skills to perform their jobs safely
  • Communicate consistently on all activities to appropriate individuals and adhere to company-wide policies
  • Participate in special projects or work as assigned
  • Be willing to be cross-trained and assist in other departments as required
  • Travel 80% to designated terminals throughout the country, with an emphasis on North East and Midwest terminals (including Ohio, Kansas City, North/South Carolina, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania)
  • Follow all company and Railroad safety policies
  • Respond to after-hour call outs
  • Perform maintenance on support equipment such as forklifts and man lifts
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean motor vehicle record (MVR)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining heavy/industrial equipment
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, electrical, and PLCs with the ability to read and understand schematics for both electrical and hydraulics
  • Experience working on DC low voltage and AC high voltage circuits
  • Comfortable working at elevated heights
  • Possess own tools
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in the presence of loud machinery
  • Ability to recognize all colors in a normal spectrum
  • Ability to work outside in all, sometimes extreme, weather conditions
  • Detail-oriented with an uncompromising safety mindset
  • Basic computer skills for maintaining accurate maintenance records
  • Willingness to travel up to 80% to terminals throughout the United States, with an emphasis on East Coast/Midwest regions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Railroad or Intermodal experience
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A
  • Basic understanding of VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) or willingness to learn
