Mobile Trailer Mechanic II

About the role
This is a dedicated on-site position focused on preventive maintenance, DOT inspections, and repairs—we do not provide emergency roadside repairs. The Mobile Trailer Technician II performs certified DOT inspections, preventive maintenance, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework. Work is performed at the customer’s site. Under supervision, this role can handle more advanced repairs and assists senior technicians while continuing to develop advanced mechanical skills. A successful technician complies with all company policies and achieves high performance metrics.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on various trailers and equipment with little or no supervision.
- Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using a company-issued iOS device and the proprietary TRAIT application, including uploading photos.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems, including trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, and brake chambers.
- Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical components while adhering to safe operating practices.
- Independently manage parts inventory and equipment on the company-issued service truck, including periodic reconciliation.
- Maintain and operate the company-issued service vehicle, conducting safety checks and pre-/post-trip inspections.
- Apply technical knowledge acquired through formal training or on-the-job experience to perform job duties effectively.
- Assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, and meet expectations through effective communication.
- Manage concurrent tasks, prioritize work-related activities, and allocate time effectively.
- Act with integrity, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs in a mobile/field environment.
- Respond to call center-dispatched unscheduled service and maintenance requests.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, and jacks.
- Work with a high degree of independence and manage your daily schedule.
- Maintain high productivity and work within or close to Standard Repair Times.
- Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as needed for repairs.
- Communicate with management and support teams via email or phone to obtain approvals, retrieve purchase order numbers, or discuss RO findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, and environmental policies, as well as federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
- Participate in and complete all required company safety training.
- Build and maintain good working relationships with assigned customers and vendors.
- Maintain the company-issued service truck, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre/post-trip inspections.
- Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures, and stay updated on safety protocols.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair various types of trailer equipment and systems, including trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework.
- Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to evaluate alternatives.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
- Assist Mobile Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of experience in a related field (Trailers). Alternatively, any level of degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline or 5 years of experience in a related field.
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
- OEM training and certifications are preferred.
- Complete all required company training.
- Ability to successfully complete and pass a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment. A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical. If the DOT medical card has four (4) months or less of validity remaining, a DOT physical will be required.
- Due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations, candidates must be at least 21 years or older.
- Valid driver’s license required; must be able to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
- Class CDL C License required or must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
Qualifications
- ASE T8 (PMI) certification (preferred).
- ASE 608/609, T4 (Brakes), T5 (Suspension), T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems), and T7 (HVAC) certifications (preferred).
