An automated guided vehicle (AGV) enables lights-out manufacturing and distribution by moving product within a process without human involvement. This role requires excellence in mechatronic design and cutting-edge software development.

About the role

You will report to the VP of Mobile Robots and work within the Vehicle Mechatronics group of Robotic Systems Development – Mobile Robots across NA and EMEA. Entrepreneurial thinking, rapid innovation, and strong engineering skills are critical for success.

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative designs for AGV vehicles, including electro-mechanical hardware, from initial concept to production release while ensuring Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) requirements are met.
  • Demonstrate strong capability in DFMEA and PFMEA within project timelines and budgetary targets.
  • Ensure the vehicle meets all validation and regulatory targets.
  • Realize and refine design concepts with a strong modularity approach across products and global requirements.
  • Release all engineering documentation within the company’s database for production.
  • Interface with departments such as Software, Purchasing, Quality, Production, and Customer Service.
  • Create and release engineering documentation, including specifications, drawings (prototype to production), structured CAD data, and BOMs.
  • Develop and manage a mechanical Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Adhere to the company’s project timeline and submit required documentation.
  • Manage changes (ECN) during the production phase.
  • Create and release a Test Verification Plan, follow test phase results, and adjust designs accordingly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) or higher in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university; Master of Science Degree (MS) preferred.
  • 15+ years of related experience in industrial equipment.
  • Integrated working experience with CAD tools: Unigraphics (NX) and/or SolidWorks (surfaces, solids, assemblies, and drawings).
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) experience, with knowledge of manufacturing processes to achieve cost-effective designs.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5, drawing standards (assemblies and components), GD&T (datum schemes, tolerances, and tolerance stack-ups).
  • Integrated working experience with CAE tools: structural and fluids/thermo (Unigraphics NX and/or Ansys).
  • Knowledge of ANSI, UL, ISO, and CE standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs (Word, Excel).

Schedule

This role is based in the Grand Rapids office with up to 50% travel to support EMEA and APAC development entities.

Pay

The base pay range for this role is $136,800–$171,000 at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined by factors such as work location, education, experience, knowledge, and skills.
