Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a Motor Vehicle Operator regularly drives various motor vehicles, including automobiles, buses, trucks, and ambulances, to transport people, material, and equipment as required. Duties may include plowing snow, monitoring gauges, checking fluid levels and tire pressures, and performing routine maintenance.

Duties

  • Drives a variety of motor vehicles both on and off State property.
  • Monitors gauges and checks fluid levels and tire pressures.
  • Starts, stops, steers, and controls vehicles.
  • Moves or carries cargo from the vehicle to the delivery or storage point.
  • Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle operated.
  • Tends to the routine maintenance of vehicles.
  • Performs simple automotive repairs and maintenance.
  • Operates and maintains motorized equipment in support of maintenance, grounds, or building trades crews.
  • Posts manifests and other records of goods and people transported.
  • Maps routes, itineraries, and points of call.
  • Maintains log of required maintenance, mileage, and fueling.
  • Operates and maintains vehicle, including fueling, recommended service, and daily inspection checklist.
  • May operate and maintain motorized equipment in support of maintenance, grounds or building trades crews.
  • Posts manifests and other records of goods and people transported in order to document their safe delivery.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must possess a New York State driver license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Candidates may be required to possess a CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D license.
  • Knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the vehicle in question.
  • Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried and any special handling required.
  • Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability in the operation of motor vehicles as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes and other cargo onto and off of transport vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Customer service experience.
