About the role
The overall function of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for road and bridge maintenance. Located in District 62, Livingston Parish (Walker Maintenance Unit), Unit 540, the role reports directly to the Highway Foreman 1. The incumbent must be self-motivated, able to perform duties with minimal supervision, and interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise. Participation in DOTD structured training programs and compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, manuals, and directives is required.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy and specialized equipment used in road and bridge maintenance
- Assist with construction, repair, and upkeep of highways and bridges
- Perform routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance
- Support traffic control, cleanup, and emergency response activities
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Perform physical tasks such as lifting, loading materials, and using hand and power tools
- Assist or guide lower-level operators as needed
This role requires reliability, safety awareness, and the ability to adapt to changing work conditions. Position is subject to nighttime operations, call outs for emergencies outside of normal work hours, and random drug/alcohol screening.
Requirements
- Ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; manual lifting of more than 50 pounds requires assistance
- General proficiency in the use of computers
- No prior experience or training required
Qualifications
This position may be filled as one of the following, based on qualifications and agency needs:
- Mobile Equipment Operator 1: Class D, Chauffeur’s License required upon appointment
- Mobile Equipment Operator 2: Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required upon appointment
- Mobile Equipment Operator 1/Heavy: Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required upon appointment
Pay
- Mobile Equipment Operator 1: Starting salary of $16.06/hour, plus $1.00/hour premium pay for every hour worked. A 10% base pay increase is granted upon attainment of permanent status.
- Mobile Equipment Operator 2: Starting salary of $17.18/hour, plus $1.00/hour premium pay for every hour worked. A 10% base pay increase is granted upon attainment of permanent status.
- Mobile Equipment Operator 1/Heavy: Starting salary of $21.05/hour. Additional compensation may be considered for extraordinary qualifications.
