Mobile Engineer, Android

About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer, Android, to lead critical native Android initiatives across Upstart’s Cash Line and Unsecured Installment teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead Android migration and development efforts across the Cash Line and Unsecured Installment product surfaces, making strategic technical decisions to enhance quality, scalability, and speed.
• Drive the delivery of Upstart’s Android launch plan, translating business objectives into pragmatic technical milestones and execution strategies.
• Define and evolve the mobile architecture, ensuring a robust foundation that supports native Android and React Native surfaces while maintaining Android expertise at the core.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering stakeholders to turn roadmap priorities into durable and scalable mobile solutions.
• Maintain high engineering standards through technical leadership, code reviews, mentorship, and pragmatic execution in high-visibility, ambiguous problem spaces.
• Post-launch, provide ongoing Android expertise to support continuous improvement, innovation, and cross-team collaboration.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including extensive experience building and shipping native Android applications using Kotlin and/or Java.
• Proven track record leading large, cross-team mobile initiatives, platform migrations, or launching new mobile products in production environments.
• Experience delivering consumer-facing mobile products at scale with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and user experience.
• Deep expertise in native Android development with Kotlin and/or Java, complemented by working experience with React Native and TypeScript.
• Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture ownership, mentorship, and influence across engineering teams.
