About the role
The Department of Pathology is seeking an MLS Supervisor (Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor) to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of a clinical laboratory unit or shift. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary in-house supervisory staff member for assigned section and in Core Services.
- Communicate project statuses to appropriate others and manage customer expectations effectively.
- Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.
- Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in a unit/shift.
- Perform assigned bench duties regularly and maintain technical competency on designated benches.
- Provide direct supervision of assigned personnel.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- At least 4 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
- At least 2 years of experience with high complexity testing is required.
- Absolutely required: Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.
Desirable Qualifications
- Comprehensive experience in molecular (nucleic acid-based) techniques and associated instrumentation is highly desirable.
- Experience in flow cytometry techniques and associated instrumentation is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated technical writing (particularly for NCCLS and CAP-compliant documents) is desired.
- Demonstrated proficiency in working with laboratory information systems, database, middleware, and web applications are desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in supervisory responsibilities in an academic medical center.
- Experience working in an academic health center is desirable.
- Experience with validation and implementation of new testing or instruments.
- Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.
- Knowledge of and applied experience working with collective bargaining work rules.
- Experience developing and delivering laboratory sciences-based technical training.
- Experience working with laboratory automation.
