About the role

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Minor Shelter Life Skills Manager will provide direct supervision of youth at the Urban Peak Minor Shelter program. Responsibilities include ongoing engagement, assessment, intervention, and ensuring client safety by delivering appropriate and effective program services in a positive environment. The position supports youth intakes, assessments, crisis phone counseling, client data collection, documentation, file maintenance, and assists the Minor Shelter Case Manager with discharge information. The role involves communication with the Minor Shelter Case Manager and, when applicable, with the youth’s family, working toward program termination within 21 days of entry. The Minor Shelter Life Skills Manager will also assist with reporting maintenance issues and ensure program facilitation aligns with Urban Peak’s mission. This position works with youth ages 12–17 experiencing homelessness, whose acuity varies based on mental and physical health needs and histories of trauma. The priority is family reunification or referral to other systems of care within 21 days of program entry. All interactions, interventions, and environments must be trauma-informed and emphasize the physical and emotional safety of youth and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise youth in accordance with facility rules and regulations
  • Conduct youth intakes and assessments
  • Provide crisis phone counseling and de-escalation support for verbal and physical altercations
  • Collect and maintain accurate client data, documentation, and file maintenance
  • Support the Minor Shelter Case Manager with discharge information
  • Communicate with the Minor Shelter Case Manager and, when applicable, the youth’s family
  • Work with youth and the shelter team toward program termination within 21 days of entry
  • Report maintenance issues and ensure program operations align with Urban Peak’s mission
  • Ensure trauma-informed interactions, interventions, and environments that prioritize physical and emotional safety
  • Facilitate group activities and discussions
  • Provide milieu supervision to ensure the safety of youth and their environment
  • Ensure youth maintain cleanliness of the shelter environment
  • Provide direction and support to youth on daily chores and milieu activities
  • Maintain a welcoming presence and support youth entering the shelter
  • Collect and record intake information to reflect client needs
  • Assess appropriateness of client admission to the shelter and forward data to the intake supervisor for follow-up

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of college; OR a high school diploma or equivalent AND six (6+) years of experience in the human services field OR direct experience with homeless or runaway youth
  • Ability to connect and work effectively with a diverse, resistant street youth population
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment; set clear and appropriate boundaries with youth
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting the homeless adolescent population, including mental health and substance abuse among high-risk young adults
  • Provide trauma-informed, appropriate, and effective services
  • Strong problem-solving skills (multi-tasking, assessment, organization, and prioritization)
  • Commitment to trauma-informed care
  • QMAP certified or eligible for QMAP certification
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to pass federal and state background checks
  • Ability to pass pre-employment TB screening and a pre-employment physical examination
  • Must be insurable as a driver on Urban Peak’s auto liability policy to conduct agency business or transport youth using an Urban Peak vehicle or an approved personal vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to use a second language in written and verbal communication (Spanish, Vietnamese, ASL)
  • Lived experience reflective of the youth served
  • Team-oriented with the ability to coordinate with various departments and staff
