Mine Safety Specialist I

About the role

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) seeks a Mine Safety Specialist I to ensure a safe working environment for coal miners in the Commonwealth. This role involves inspecting coal mines, providing training, and enforcing regulations.

Responsibilities

• Inspects coal mines and makes safety recommendations
• Trains and serves as a member of the Division's Mine Rescue Team
• Aids in mine rescue and recovery work
• Assists with accident investigations and investigates complaints
• Attends safety seminars

Requirements

• Five (5) years experience in coal mines in Kentucky
• Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in mining engineering (substitutes for two (2) years of experience)
• Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in mining technology (substitutes for one (1) year of experience)
• Must be a Kentucky Certified Mine Foreman by the Kentucky Department for Natural Resources
• Must obtain Kentucky Mine Inspector Certification, Kentucky Mine Rescue Certification, and Kentucky Mine Instructor Certification within six (6) months of employment
• Must become a working member of the Division of Mine Safety's Mine Rescue Team within six (6) months of employment
• Maintain compliance with 30 CFR Part 49.17 for Mine Rescue Team participation
• Pass random drug screening tests for length of employment in this job classification

Qualifications

• Physical requirements as outlined on MSHA Form 5000-3
• Annual physical exam documented on MSHA Form 5000-3
