Mine Engineer

About the Role

The Manh Choh Project is a greenfield gold deposit in eastern Alaska, with ore hauled to Kinross’ Fort Knox mine north of Fairbanks for processing. The mine site is located in the Tetlin Hills, approximately 250 miles southeast of Fort Knox and 10 miles southeast of Tok, with production expected to begin in 2024.

This role is responsible for carrying out a full range of engineering functions including short-term and medium-term mine planning, pit design, equipment analysis, and production reporting. You will collaborate directly with staff from other departments and liaise with the mining contractor.

Responsibilities

• Provide short-term and medium-term mine plans, production schedules, drill & blast designs, and communicate these to stakeholders.
• Perform reconciliation to short-term plans and identify areas for improvement.
• Identify risks (e.g., equipment reliability, personnel, grade, crusher/mill reliability) and opportunities that may impact mine plans.
• Use pit and phase designs to generate short-range mine plans that accurately predict mining progress by period.
• Design intermediate pit phases based on the geological block model and constraints such as mining limitations, slope design criteria, topography, and facility location.
• Design waste dumps, stockpiles, access roads, ramps, and other mine site facilities.
• Confirm that pit designs are properly implemented in the field.
• Maintain accurate records and files, including Key Performance Indicators for Mining.
• Exercise discretion and judgment in job performance.
• Ensure punctuality and regular attendance.
• Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
• Work safely in all areas, identify potential safety hazards, and collaborate with management to correct them.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering (required).
• Minimum of two years of experience in mine engineering or a related discipline (preferred).
• Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to pit design, mine planning, and equipment analysis.
• General understanding of open-pit mining operations, milling operations, and mine maintenance.
• Working knowledge and proficiency with PC-based software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation tools.
• Experience with MineSight, SHOTPlus, and AutoCAD (preferred).
• Strong commitment to safe working practices.
• Solid verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license issued by the state.
• Ability to meet physical demands as outlined in attached documentation.
• Willingness to work holidays, shift work, and weekends as required.
