About the Role

A Millwright builds, assembles, repairs, or maintains machinery in factories, plants, or construction sites, including steel or iron structural pieces and components. The role involves transforming metal pieces into functional elements through cutting and fabrication techniques, setting up and assembling machinery, and ensuring proper installation, disassembly, or relocation of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain machinery and equipment using hoists, lift trucks, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Adjust machinery parts using hand tools and measuring instruments to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
  • Align machines and equipment using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, levels, lasers, and plumb bobs.
  • Level and establish centerlines using straightedges, levels, and transits.
  • Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels using portable gas heating equipment.
  • Dismantle machinery and equipment for shipment to installation sites, often performing installation and maintenance as part of a team.
  • Construct foundations for machines using hand tools and building materials such as wood, cement, grout, or steel.
  • Replace defective parts, adjust clearances, and align moving parts to ensure optimal performance.
  • Visually inspect and test materials to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Use rigging techniques to move or support heavy equipment, including selecting appropriate gear such as cables, pulleys, vices, and winches.
  • Signal or verbally communicate with workers to ensure safety during hoisting and moving of loads.
  • Control movement of heavy equipment through confined spaces using chain falls, gin poles, and other equipment.
  • Assist in fabrication, setup, and repair of rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear.
  • Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures using bolts and clamps.
  • Operate vehicles or mechanized equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and aerial lifts.
  • Perform maintenance, welding, and fabrication functions as needed.
  • Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability before use.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Four (4) years of experience in the trade.
  • Mechanical proficiency with personal tools appropriate for the trade.
  • Ability to supervise or oversee the work of others and provide clear direction.
  • Strong problem-solving skills using deductive and inductive reasoning.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools, hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure, levels, welding, and cutting tools.
  • Reading comprehension for blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to perform mathematical functions including fractions, decimals, and percentages, with a strong understanding of geometry and/or algebra.
  • Familiarity with hand or flag signals for communication.
  • Commitment to following safety requirements and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for certain positions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Physically demanding work requiring considerable use of arms, legs, and whole-body movement, including climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work off the ground at varying heights and around moving machinery or parts.
  • Willingness to work in non-temperature-controlled environments and outdoors in all weather conditions, including uneven terrain.
