Military Maintenance Specialist III

About the role

Military Maintenance Specialists perform maintenance work across multiple trades, including carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and heating. They maintain grounds, roads, and training areas, including snow removal in winter months. Specialists may operate heavy equipment such as loaders, excavators, dozers, and heavy trucks equipped with plows and wings.

Work is performed at military facilities in Vermont. An incumbent often works near or with hazardous materials, including ammunition and high voltage, and may enter confined spaces or remove snow on runways. The role involves exposure to loud noises, operating heavy equipment, and climbing ladders. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. Work is performed in all weather conditions, with occasional outside-of-normal working hours, travel, and overnight stays.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair facilities across multiple trades (carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, heating).
• Maintain grounds, roads, and training areas, including snow removal.
• Operate heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, dozers, and heavy trucks with plows and wings.
• Follow safety procedures for construction and repair of building systems.
• Complete assignments correctly, safely, and in a timely manner.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) or more years in construction or facilities maintenance.
• OR at least one (1) year as a Military Maintenance Specialist II.
• Valid driver’s license.
• CDL license or completion of a State-approved HVAC course.
• Ability to lift equipment and materials weighing up to fifty pounds.
• Must pass a federal background check (Tier 1) for a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC), which may be required for continued employment depending on assigned duties.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five (5) or more years of experience in building construction or maintenance.
• Building trades or vocational education.
• Previous experience working on a military installation.
• Knowledge of Building Automation Systems.
• Locksmith knowledge.
