Resource Specialist

  • Duties and responsibilities:
    • Provides an educational program for students identified by the School Appraisal Team (S.A.T.) as having exceptional needs.
    • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil’s progress.
    • Responsible for the diagnosis and remediation of students with learning disorders, including the development and implementation of an Individualized Educational Plan (I.E.P.).
    • Supervises an instructional aide.
    • Coordinates and chairs all School Appraisal Team (S.A.T.) functions.
    • Identifies students with special needs and develops and implements an individualized educational plan for all students admitted to the resource specialist program.
    • Refers to the Educational Assessment Services all students not making adequate progress in the resource specialist program.
    • Supervises at least one full-time resource specialist aide.
    • Develops appropriate behavioral management strategies.
    • Administers appropriate assessment tools for identifying, placing, and evaluating students referred to SAT.
    • Provides appropriate materials and media for regular classroom instruction as needed.
    • Provides appropriate instructions or resources (one-to-one, small group, regular classroom) as prescribed in the I.E.P.
    • Maintains a caseload not exceeding 24 at any given period.
    • Develops weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy and curriculum of the District.
    • Monitors classroom environment ensuring that clean and safe conditions exist, notifying principal of any unclean or unsafe classroom conditions.
    • Makes students responsible for putting materials, supplies, tools, etc., safely and neatly away at the end of class session.

Credential

Special Education Credential/minimal B.A. degree.

Qualifications

  • Three or more years full-time teaching experience.
  • Completed or enrolled in an advanced preparation program in special education.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills, which will facilitate joint problem-solving and stimulate sharing of skills and resources.
  • Demonstrates skills in effective communication with parents and staff.
  • Demonstrates skills in dealing with conflicts.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of due process procedures and their implementation.
  • Ability to recognize the need for student services beyond the scope of the Resource Specialist program.

Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class

  • Description of position:
    • Provides an educational program for pupils who demonstrate a significant discrepancy between their academic potential and their classroom performance.
    • The pupil’s learning disability must be related to an identified neurological or perceptual disorder that prohibits satisfactory progress in the regular classroom.

Credential

Learning Handicapped Credential.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
  • Course work in the psychological characteristics of exceptional and remedial children.

Experience

  • Two years of successful classroom teaching in the district is normally required before assignment to this position.
  • Extensive experience in working with learning handicapped pupils and/or in remedial teaching techniques, re-teaching of reading, or reading center programs is desirable, as is clinical experience with the emotionally disturbed.

Personal Qualities

  • Appearance, grooming, and personality that establish a desirable example for pupils.
  • Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health.
  • Empathy for pupils with severe learning problems (academic and emotional).
  • Ability to relate to students, parents, medical, and psychological advisors, school administrators, and other classroom teachers.

Supervision

  • Responsible to: School principal with staff assistance from the Special Education Department.
  • Responsible for: Students assigned to Learning Handicapped class.

  • Valid California teaching credential: Education Specialist Instruction (Mild/Moderate or Mild/Moderate Support Needs) OR Proof of University Intern Eligibility: Education Specialist Instruction (Mild/Moderate or Mild/Moderate Support Needs) - Valid RSP Certificate (necessary with Learning Handicapped credential only) - Autism Spectrum Disorders Added Authorization (AAAS) - English Learner Authorization
