Job Description / Essential Elements

  • Resource Specialist:
    • Provides an educational program for students identified as having exceptional needs.
    • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff on each pupil's progress.
    • Responsible for the diagnosis and remediation of students with learning disorders, including the development and implementation of an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
    • Supervises an instructional aide.
    • Coordinates and chairs all School Appraisal Team (SAT) functions.
    • Identifies students with special needs and develops and implements an individualized educational plan.
    • Refers students not making adequate progress to Educational Assessment Services.
    • Supervises at least one full-time resource specialist aide.
    • Develops appropriate behavioral management strategies.
    • Administers appropriate assessment tools for identifying, placing, and evaluating students referred to SAT.
    • Provides appropriate materials and media for regular classroom instruction.
    • Provides appropriate instructions or resources as prescribed in the IEP.
    • Maintains a caseload not exceeding 24 at any given period.
    • Develops weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the District's instructional philosophy and curriculum.
    • Monitors classroom environment ensuring clean and safe conditions, notifying principal of any unclean or unsafe classroom conditions.
    • Monitors classroom activities, making students responsible for putting materials, supplies, tools, etc., safely and neatly away at the end of class session.
  • Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class:
    • Provides an educational program for pupils demonstrating a significant discrepancy between their academic potential and classroom performance.
    • Teaches learning handicapped pupils in a special day class the basic learning skills and other subject matter commensurate with their emotional, physical, and intellectual needs.
    • Provides individualized and small group instruction that parallels regular classroom curriculum with emphasis on remedial reading instruction.
    • Provides individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problems.
    • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff on each pupil's progress.
    • Assists in the diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of pupil's progress.
    • Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, social skills, and self-image.
    • Arranges for integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where pupils can meet with success.
    • Serves as a member of the School Appraisal Team (SAT) or the District Educational Assessment Team (EAS).
    • Supervises pupils assigned to his group as problem situations arise elsewhere in the schools.
    • Performs all other functions performed by regular classroom teachers.

Credential

  • Special Education Credential
  • Minimal B.A. degree

Qualifications

  • Three or more years full-time teaching experience
  • Completed or enrolled in an advanced preparation program in special education
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills, facilitating joint problem-solving and sharing of skills and resources
  • Demonstrates skills in effective communication with parents and staff
  • Demonstrates skills in dealing with conflicts
  • Demonstrates knowledge of due process procedures and their implementation
  • Recognizes the need for student services beyond the scope of the Resource Specialist program

Supervision

  • Resource Specialist: Director of Pupil Personnel Services
  • Learning Handicapped/Special Day Class: School principal with staff assistance from the Special Education Department

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid California teaching credential: Education Specialist Instruction (Mild/Moderate or Mild/Moderate Support Needs)
  • Proof of University Intern Eligibility: Education Specialist Instruction (Mild/Moderate or Mild/Moderate Support Needs)
  • Valid RSP Certificate (necessary with Learning Handicapped credential only)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders Added Authorization (AAAS)
  • English Learner Authorization
  • Copy of Transcript (ALL Undergraduate AND Graduate Coursework)
  • Credential Copy (A detailed screenshot from the CTC website OR an Intern Eligible letter from your University OR a credential status letter from your university with an anticipated date of completion OR proof of credential application. PLEASE NOTE: Credential must post by July 1, 2026.)
