About the role

Welds metal components using electric arc-welding equipment. This position may require overtime, including weekends. Regular attendance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Reads blueprints, job specifications, or operator instructions for product specifications and quantity required.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strikes (forms) arc to generate heat, melt, and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece, joining edges of workpiece.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or workpiece.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
  • Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheats workpiece with hand torch or heating furnace.
  • Positions and clamps workpieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture.
  • Tacks assemblies together.
  • Completes statistical process control (SPC) charts using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, tape measures, and gauges.
  • Complies with all safety procedures and utilizes job safety devices.
  • Accurately completes shop floor paperwork, including production release, routing sheets, product identification, and electronic time sheet.
  • Communicates with material handlers and supervisors to ensure availability of proper materials.
  • Participates in continuous improvement activities and team environments.
  • May be required to work off shifts as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum five years of welding experience or equivalent combination of metallurgical education and welding experience.

Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Proficiency with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of design software.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds; occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and vibration.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
