About the role

Mount Vernon School is seeking substitute teachers for the Middle School (Grades 6-8) to cover classes in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitutes help students learn required subject matter and/or skills for scheduled lessons and provide meaningful instruction. Assignments may be full-day or half-day, with varying notice, and must be fulfilled between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Front Office at the beginning and end of the school day to pick up and return materials/schedules.
  • Follow sign-out procedures as prescribed by the Front Office.
  • Carry out the program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Guide the learning process toward achieving curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in lesson plans.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom (e.g., straighten chairs, tables, clear whiteboard).
  • Take attendance in accordance with school procedures.
  • Ensure students are never left unattended in the classroom.
  • Perform duties usually required of the absent teacher, such as lunchroom supervision.
  • Know emergency evacuation routes for assigned classrooms and school procedures/regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the Head of School.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field (preferred).
  • Teaching certificate (preferred).
  • Classroom experience and proficiency with technological tools and platforms (preferred).
