Middle School Food and Sustainability Assistant Teacher
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as an active co-planner with the lead Food & Sustainability Teacher, meeting regularly before and after kitchen and garden rotations to review lessons, share observations, and refine upcoming sessions
- Collaborate with the lead teacher to support students in building independence with kitchen and garden skills through compelling, standards-aligned lessons that challenge critical thinking
- Mentor individual students in and out of class; model respect and curiosity for learning; encourage students’ interests and talents
- Support setting up organizational systems in the unique classroom environment (outdoor garden, kitchen classroom, long-term planning of outdoor spaces)
- Support a positive, achievement-oriented, and structured learning environment in which all students can experience success
- In collaboration with the lead teacher, maintain garden spaces (pollinator garden, compost, vegetable garden, seed propagation) at the current ECS site
- Support early planning, vision, and long-term success for outdoor learning spaces within the ECS community and beyond — including raised beds, composting infrastructure, and garden design in partnership with students and community
- Aid in kitchen and garden lesson prep and clean-up
- Actively engage with the school community by attending annual ECS events such as Earth Nite/Green Roots, Back to School Night, Enrollment Events, and Curriculum Nights
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- PA teaching certification
- Experience in food service, culinary arts, urban farming, or gardening is a significant plus
- Interest in middle school education and comfort working with adolescent learners
- Experience with or enthusiasm for curriculum co-planning and a collaborative teaching model
- Familiarity with charter schools preferred

Minimum starting salary of $34,220 up to a maximum starting salary of $43,467, dependent upon prior years’ relevant experience.
