Description

The middle school assistant coach is responsible to the athletic director/building principal for the planning, coordinating, and directing of specific athletic activities to which he/she has been assigned.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for their implementation.
  • Coordinate athletic activities with the normal school program.
  • Develop vigorous activities that promote physical health and develop physical skills.
  • Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through sportsmanship.
  • Be knowledgeable of rules, regulations, and policies set forth by the Hammond School Board, School Administration, Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, Indiana High School Athletic Association, and Indiana Lake Shore Conference.
  • Prepare an athletic budget, select officials, requisition equipment, arrange schedules, and handle other duties necessary for the efficient operation of an athletic program.
  • Ensure that all participants have had required physical examinations and have signed the Parent & Physician’s Certificate.
  • Work closely with the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics in checking player eligibility, creating eligibility lists, and submitting IHSAA entry lists.
  • Develop plans for issuing and receiving play equipment.
  • Attend departmental staff meetings, clinics, and other professional growth activities as approved by the principal.
  • Cooperate with other members of the athletic staff in establishing rules for conduct, dress, and appearance.
  • Supervise activities beyond the school day as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
  • A thorough understanding of participants: physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • Skill in teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
  • Desirable character and personality traits.
  • High moral standards.
  • Athletic ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members, and the administration.
  • A thorough knowledge of relevant rules and regulations.

Employment Information

Personnel are recommended annually by the building principal and approved by the Superintendent. Compensation will be determined by the School City of Hammond agreement. Performance of the job will be evaluated annually.
