The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a range of residential and non-residential services for juveniles, including detention, commitment, and parole. DYS manages fifteen secure facilities and contracts with various private providers. The division oversees the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, a program aimed at preventing youth from entering the juvenile justice system.

Description of Job Purpose

Deliver health care to detained, pre-trial, and committed youth. Provide primary care through licensed independent practitioners/Mid Level Providers, ensuring comprehensive health care from initial assessments to ongoing maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate assessments and appropriate treatments for all youth admitted to the facility through clinical management.

  • Monitor and report communicable diseases to the CDC/State Health Department.

  • Oversee emergency medical situations and approve and monitor treatment plans.

  • Supervise pharmacy orders and communicate health information to staff, families, and administration.

  • Collaborate with the DYS Medical Director on individual cases and refer youth to off-campus specialty care.

  • Document and report on health care activities, including mental health evaluations and health education sessions.

  • Participate in quality assurance projects and ensure compliance with DYS and state medical standards.

  • Provide health education to youth and staff on topics such as healthy lifestyles, injury prevention, and medication administration.

Requirements

  • Current, valid licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing; or current, valid licensure as a Physician Assistant from the Colorado Medical Board.

  • Prescriptive authority (RXN status) as per DORA.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in adolescent health care, assessing, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic illnesses.

  • Experience in documenting in an electronic medical record and relevant State service experience.

  • Knowledge of oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to resolve conflicts.

  • Experience clinically supervising medical staff.
