About the role
This is a nationwide search for a Mid-Level Electrical Engineer (Generation) to join WSP’s Power & Energy team. Preference will be given to candidates based in or willing to relocate to Seattle, WA; Meridian, ID; Atlanta, GA; Houston, TX; Oradell, NJ; Mount Laurel, NJ; or Overland Park, KS. The role involves leading and supporting complex, multi-site and multi-phase projects—from early due diligence through remediation, permitting, design, and construction—across utility, industrial, and commercial sectors for both public and private clients.
Responsibilities
- Research, plan, and design transmission and distribution substations, power systems, renewable energy solutions, and protection and control systems.
- Determine methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to substation components, equipment specifications, IFR/IRC design processes, and IEEE/NESC Standards/NERC regulations.
- Review and advise on third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
- Perform electrical engineering work including single-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangement and substation layout, bus arrangement, grounding grid design, and lightning protection in conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
- Incorporate future-ready techniques, operating strategies, and design requirements into equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC panel design, and conduit and trenching strategies.
- Support senior engineers with research and recommendations for components, field equipment applications, and operations.
- Provide technical input and guidance on engineering, design, testing, maintenance, modifications, and construction procedures.
- Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, grounding touch and step potentials, short circuit studies, protective device coordination, one-line diagrams, protective relaying, and substation switchyard layouts.
- Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; and update electrical infrastructure layout plans with coordination across owners, disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
- Work individually or as part of a cross-functional team to execute projects, assist with installations, calculate costs and quantities, and ensure compliance with specifications, permit applications, and regulatory documentation.
- Prepare data visualizations, reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for interpretation and presentation of findings.
- Maintain a high level of quality and responsiveness aligned with Pickett’s standards.
- Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to address design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
- Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of field investigation data and develop action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation.
- Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
- Comply with regulatory requirements for data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
- Interact confidently and professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for large capital projects.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Experience working with operations and project controls for reporting and proposal development.
- Proficient knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build, and their application to permitting and project-related issues.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management across rehabilitation and new design projects.
- Working knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Ability to perform technical computations and calculations involving electrical engineering principles, interpret plans and specifications, and make factual comparisons to regulations.
- Project management experience with small to mid-level projects, including tracking hours and expenses.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on construction and design aspects of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Strong self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team members with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (e.g., CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP), AutoCAD Electrical, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
- Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
- 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.

Pay
Expected Salary (all locations): $86,100 – $150,590. WSP USA reserves the right to adjust the final offer based on education, experience, skills, internal equity, and location.
