About the role

This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Mid-Level Electrical Engineer (Generation) to join our Power & Energy team in Oradell, NJ. The following location will also be considered: Atlanta, GA.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector.
  • Tasks may include assistance with the research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of contexts (utilities, transportation, building, and Federal, State, and local government projects).
  • Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned material, installations, and construction specifications.
  • Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
  • Produces, coordinates, review and/or approve electrical design plans for complex power plant projects.
  • Applies high-level electrical engineering techniques to support all project phases, all the way from preliminary design, to commissioning support and record drawings.
  • Supports generation project scoping, budgeting, and proposals.
  • Supports/oversees the development of power plant electrical drawings (One lines, Breaker Control Schematics, Bus Duct Layouts, Equipment Elevations, Cable Schedules, etc.)
  • Supports/oversees the development of equipment specifications (i.e. power and control cables, unit auxiliary transformers, isolated phase bus ducts, generator circuit breakers, power distribution centers, etc.)
  • Supports larger-scale electrical engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory work quality.
  • Affords assistance with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards.
  • Meets with client, vendor, and/or subcontractor personnel to discuss project status, explaining engineering decisions and compromises.
  • Ensures technical reports and presentations effectively explain research, findings, and recommendations.
  • Maintains a high level of quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with applicable standards.
  • Develops a client base for providing high level electrical engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities.
  • Mentors staff to support their growth and professional development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience as a power engineer providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation.
  • Professional Engineer license required (multiple states preferred).
  • Highly proficient with power engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Highly proficient with power plant infrastructure design involving Combined Cycle and Simple Cycle Gas Turbines or Heat Recovery Steam Generators.
  • Comprehensive experience in coordinating with engineers in adjacent disciplines such as mechanical and civil structural engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements (IEEE, NEC, NEMA, IEC, etc).
  • Highly proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Experience with planning and conducting inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC standards.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., PTW/SKM, ETAP, SES CDEGS, AutoCAD electrical, Bentley MicroStation, SmartPlant, Revit).
  • Experienced with providing critical review of vendor documents and preparing complex technical deliverables.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Extensive experience in electrical studies such as short circuit, load flow, motor start analysis, relay coordination, and arc flash.
  • Extensive experience in power system protection and control.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.

Benefits

  • Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $86,100 - $150,590.
