Microgrid/Controls Lead
Role Overview
The Microgrid / Controls Lead will own the design and development of resilient microgrid and control systems to deliver stable, high-quality power to mission-critical data center loads across grid-connected, islanded, and transition operating modes. You will translate operational, reliability, and economic objectives into real-time control behavior, define system-level control philosophy and sequencing, and lead detailed controls architecture across EMS, microgrid controllers, inverter controls, and coordination with thermal generation.
This role also supports commissioning and validation to ensure performance, interoperability, and compliance with applicable grid codes and standards.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive the microgrid controls strategy for OCI mission-critical data center power systems (grid-connected, islanded, and transition modes).
- Translate operational, reliability, and economic objectives into real-time control behavior, including:
- Dispatch priorities and resource scheduling
- Grid interaction logic (import/export, curtailment, operating envelopes)
- Power quality objectives and dynamic response targets at the PCC
- Define system-level control philosophy, operating modes, sequencing, and interlocks for integrated generation, energy storage, and load systems.
- Design and validate grid-forming and grid-following strategies, including stable transitions between operating states (islanding, re-synchronization, restoration).
- Lead detailed controls architecture and integration, including:
- EMS functional requirements and interfaces
- Microgrid controller logic and coordination
- Inverter control requirements and tuning approach
- Cordination with thermal generation controls and plant-level systems
- Define measurable performance requirements for power quality, availability, and dynamic response; create acceptance criteria and test plans (FAT/SAT) to validate them.
- Partner with protection, substation, and power delivery engineering to ensure control behavior aligns with protection schemes and interconnection requirements.
- Collaborate with OEMs, integrators, EPCs, and utilities to ensure interoperability, standards compliance, and operational readiness.
- Support commissioning of inverters, EMS, and integrated control systems; troubleshoot instability, miscoordination, and nuisance trips and drive durable corrective actions.
- Develop repeatable reference architectures, design patterns, commissioning scripts, and documentation to enable consistent deployment across sites.
Basic Requirements
- 8–12+ years designing and deploying microgrids for large campuses or critical facilities.
- Deep experience with inverter-based resources, including batteries (BESS) and fuel cells, plus integration with thermal generation.
- Demonstrated experience with both islanded and grid-tied microgrid operation, including transitions between operating states.
- Strong knowledge of power quality, protection concepts/coordination, and applicable standards such as IEEE 2800 and IEEE 1547/2030.
- Proven commissioning experience with EMS and microgrid controllers.
Preferred Requirements
- Experience with microgrid platforms and ecosystems.
- Experience defining acceptance testing for islanding/re-synchronization and PCC power quality performance.
- Familiarity with utility interconnection processes and translating study outcomes into implementable control limits and operating logic.
- Strong technical writing skills for control narratives, interface definitions, and commissioning/acceptance documentation.
- Experience working in cross-functional, multi-vendor environments with strong configuration/change control discipline.
Qualifications
- Hiring Range in USD: $169,800 - $355,400 per year.
- May be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral.
