Microbiology Technician - Part Time

About the role

The Microbiology Technician prepares samples for processing and maintains documentation to facilitate testing procedures at our Madison, WI laboratory (3688 Kinsman Blvd).

Responsibilities

• Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending
• Label plates with client and sample identifiers for tracking
• Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process
• Pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate microbial growth
• Collect plates and incubate at specified time and temperature
• Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing
• Ensure materials are ready for the next testing sequence
• Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis
• Read plates and tubes to determine microorganism counts
• Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes
• Perform housekeeping duties, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized
• Participate in cleaning schedules and retain samples as required
• Adhere to all safety policies
• Support laboratory management in implementing, maintaining, and improving the management system
• Perform other related tasks as needed

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience and 1+ year of relevant work, or Bachelor’s degree
• Basic knowledge of science to perform testing procedures accurately
• Basic knowledge of personal computers for data entry
• Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies
• Planning skills to maintain supplies and meet deadlines

• General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Physical dexterity for manipulating samples

Work Environment

The role is in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coat, and eyeglasses may be required. Daily use of an autoclave is expected. The role involves continuous lifting of materials up to 50 pounds and extended periods of standing. The ability to detect slight variations in color shades is necessary.

Pay

$19.50 per hour

Schedule

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, starting at 10:30 AM. Schedule is flexible.
