About the role

We are looking for a Part-Time Microbiology Technician to join our team in Visalia, CA. As a trusted partner in public health, you will contribute to making food systems safer, healthier, and more sustainable through testing and innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Read plates and tubes to determine the number of organisms in samples.
  • Record findings on worksheets for verification and track client/sample numbers.
  • Pipette sample solutions into tubes or plates according to analysis processes.
  • Pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate the growth process.
  • Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending.
  • Collect plates and place them in incubators for specified durations and temperatures.
  • Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing as required.
  • Sterilize materials needed for analysis, including autoclaving plates before discarding.
  • Perform food poisoning, pH, and other analysis tests as requested by clients.
  • Ensure media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.
  • Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
  • Perform housekeeping duties, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized.
  • Participate in cleaning schedules and maintain retain samples as required.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and support laboratory management in implementing and improving the management system.
  • Perform other related tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • No previous laboratory experience required; full training will be provided.
  • Previous experience in manufacturing, production, warehouse, food industry, food service, or retail is beneficial.
  • 4-year science degree preferred but not required.
  • Basic knowledge of lab science to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain results.
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers for data entry.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety procedures and policies.
  • Planning skills to maintain supplies and ensure timely completion of analysis.

Skills

  • Analytical skills to complete analysis procedures and determine microorganism concentration.
  • General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for processing client data.
  • Physical dexterity for manipulating samples.
  • Ability to detect slight variations in shades of colors.

Work Environment

  • Laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control.
  • Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials.
  • Safety equipment (gloves, laboratory coat, eyeglasses) may be required depending on the testing process.
  • Daily use of an autoclave to complete analysis.
  • Continuous lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Extended time spent in a standing position.

Pay

Pay starts at $18.50–$20.50 per hour.

Schedule

  • Part-time position: 2–3 days per week (28 hours/week).
  • Weekends required.
  • Hours: 6:00 AM–2:30 PM.
