Responsibilities

• Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
• Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
• Identify and address problems affecting test performance, notifying supervisors as needed.
• Conduct a wide variety of microbiology procedures requiring independent judgment, including high complexity testing using manual and automated methods.
• Perform testing in other department areas where licensed and competency is demonstrated.
• Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment as required (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed).
• Review the accuracy of patient results before releasing or reporting.
• Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
• Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples, without collaboration with other laboratories prior to reporting results.
• Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of all ages, from newborn to geriatrics, as required.
• Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
• Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
• Serve as the Micro Tech in-charge during shifts if the supervisor is unavailable.
• Complete other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

• Current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or limited state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license as a Microbiologist Specialist (if required by state).
• CLS/MT generalist with 1 year of microbiology experience or Microbiologist Specialist preferred.
• Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or meet other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
