Microbiology Laboratory Technician

About the role

The role involves performing general laboratory tasks such as preparation of media, sample logging, and equipment maintenance under limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Washing and drying glassware and distributing to appropriate locations within the Microbiology labs.
  • Preparing solutions and reagents, media, and components for sterilization.
  • Autoclaving supplies and materials in the lab.
  • General laboratory record keeping and record storage.
  • Performing general laboratory cleaning, assisting with laboratory order and check-in of supplies, and performing quality controls.
  • Maintaining database microorganism reference cultures.
  • Providing laboratory support such as maintaining instrument use manuals and general use forms and labels.
  • Maintaining incubators, refrigerators, autoclaves, freezers, lab water systems, and disposing of biohazardous waste and samples.
  • Transporting samples between TOLMAR facilities.
  • Reviewing TOC/Conductivity data from Water Systems.
  • Entering Microbiology data into Microbiology trending system.
  • Purchasing supplies and managing supplies inventory.
  • Participating in required annual hazardous waste training.
  • Responding to spills per the Chemical Spill Procedures.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of cGMP regulations.
  • Knowledge of laboratory science principles.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow work instructions and laboratory test methods.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively on a team.

Skills

  • Acceptable MVR and valid driver’s license required.

Hazardous Waste Involvement

  • Container and tank management and inspections.
  • Generation of hazardous waste as a part of production or sampling processes.
  • Transfer of hazardous waste between lab procedure area, satellite accumulation, and storage.

Education & Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • An associates degree in Microbiology or a closely related field is preferred.
  • One or more years of experience in a laboratory environment is required.
